Enormous air pollution is recorded tonight in Skopje, and the AQI index is 165, making the Macedonian capital the most polluted European metropolis, according to data from the world service IQ Air.
According to the website that monitors air pollution, Skopje is the seventh most polluted city in the world, ahead of only cities in India, Bangladesh, Mongolia and China.
According to the application "My Air", on the other hand, the values of the AQI index in parts of the city are twice as high and are around 300, which is a level of pollution dangerous to the health of all people.
The AQI index takes into account the concentrations of PM2,5 and PM10 particles, as well as the direction and strength of the wind.
The situation is not better in many Macedonian cities. The most polluted are Bitola, Strumica, Tetovo and Kumanovo, according to My Air.
Similarly extreme levels of pollution were observed in recent days, which prompted local authorities to introduce today a series of measures and recommendations, among which is free public transport (which valid from tonight), more frequent street washing, pollution control and recommendation to cancel or postpone outdoor events.
