The Cabinet of the President of Ukraine issued a statement through the Ukrainian Embassy in which he praised the Oscar-winning actor and director.

"The director came to Kiev specifically to film all the events currently taking place in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about the Russian invasion of our country," the statement said. "Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. "Our country is grateful to him for his courage and honesty," the statement said.

The statement added:

"Sean Penn is demonstrating a courage that many others, especially some Western politicians, lacked. "The more such people - true friends of Ukraine, who support the struggle for freedom - the sooner we can stop this heinous invasion of Russia."

Penn has been at the center of many anti-war and humanitarian operations over the years.
