The first seven containers of pure HCH, each weighing 22 to 26 tons, left Ochis yesterday afternoon and were on their way to the Thessaloniki port from where they will leave for France. With this, the transportation of the hazardous historical waste from the small landfill from the former industrial giant Ohis began, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning (MESP) announced.
Just as special attention was paid to the safety of the very process of mining linadane and its isomers stored in the small landfill of the former giant Ohis, it was also coordinated, precise and extremely careful, with a particular commitment to experienced professionals who know their work down to the last detail. detail, the preparation for transportation was carried out, which includes packing and loading and the transportation itself, indicated the Ministry.
The whole process, as they inform, was conducted with special care and respect for the international regulation for cross-border transport of hazardous waste according to the Basel Convention, and now it is most important that this shipment reaches its final destination safely.
In the next period, another 20 containers will be loaded and transported by the state, thus ending the activities covered by the GEF project that is implemented through UNIDO. However, the excavation will continue with the use of funds from the Multi-Partner Environmental Fund specially established for cleaning up the contamination around Ohis in cooperation with UNOPS, according to a statement from the Ministry of Education and Culture.
