Thousands of New York City workers, mostly firefighters, protested on Brooklyn Bridge against mandatory vaccinations, announced by city officials last week.
According to the New York Fire Department, Monday's vaccination rate was 60 percent of a total of about 17.000 firefighters, significantly less than 84 percent of New Yorkers vaccinated adults.
Following the vaccination of teachers and carers in September, the vaccination rate now exceeds 95 percent, and New York has extended the vaccination obligation to all 160.000 city workers, 46.000 of whom did not receive the first dose until last week.
The police union immediately announced that it would challenge the decision in court.
To motivate the undecided, city officials have promised a $ 500 bonus for those who receive the first dose of the vaccine by October 29. After that date, those who refuse will have their income suspended.
