At least 21 people were killed in a police raid on the favela Villa Cruzeiro in Rio de Janeiro.

The operation, which also involved police helicopters, was launched to locate and arrest criminal gang leaders, including foreign nationals.

Police fired back, killing a woman with a stray bullet. The shootings also left 11 injured who were taken to hospital.

As the action unfolded, gunfire intensified, and wounded and killed were repeatedly transported to city hospitals.

The emergency medical service found 21 dead and seven injured, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
