The awards are given under the Clooney Foundation for Justice. The winners of the awards are people who are said to be "courageous defenders of justice", who are exposed to great risk because of the vocation they practice.

The awards are named after the judge Albie Sachs, who was an internationally renowned South African jurist. He spent a period of his life in prison, and part of his life in exile because of his activities against the apartheid regime, that is, against the policy of racial discrimination and the division of the population on racial grounds.
