Von der Leyen: The EU is preparing an emergency survival plan without Russian gas
The European Commission has announced the creation of an emergency plan to help EU member states cope without Russian energy sources, reports Sky News.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layen said last night that it is an initiative that continues the EU's plan to get rid of dependence on Russian coal, gas and oil and "goes hand in hand with accelerating the development of renewable energy sources".
"We are preparing emergency plans for Europe. Energy prices are high and people quite rightly expect us to do something about it," von der Leyen said in the Czech city of Litomysl, where he marked the start of the Czech Republic's six-month EU presidency.
She said the plan, which should be completed by mid-July, will focus on two key points: "where and how to save energy in a smart way to reduce the need for Russian gas and oil and support countries that they mostly depend on Russian energy companies."
"We need a joint plan to ensure that energy or gas goes where it is most needed," Ursula von der Leyen said.
