European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the goal is to fully vaccinate 70 percent of the world's population by mid-2022.

"We will only control the pandemic if we fight it in every part of the world," she said, adding that 44 percent of the world's population is currently vaccinated, mostly with vaccines donated or exported from the EU.

Von der Leyen noted that the EU is the largest donor of vaccines to date - 350 million doses distributed worldwide.

"We include 300 million doses given through the Kovacs mechanism and over 45 million doses donated bilaterally by member states, primarily to countries in the region such as the Western Balkans," von der Leyen said.
