Focus on the active role of communities in the sustainability of cultural heritage

The European Days of Cultural Heritage with the theme "Sustainable Heritage" will be held in our country from September 22 to 28, 2022. The theme focuses on the active role of communities, which build a more sustainable and secure future for European heritage, in the context of climate change and the risks it brings.

The European Days of Cultural Heritage, as a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, are among the most widely celebrated cultural events in Europe. More than 50.000 events that will take place this year across the continent aim to recognize the value of the common European heritage and the need to preserve it for present and future generations.

- Sustainable development is one of the priorities of the Council of Europe. Our organization has contributed to the creation of common legal bases in Europe for biodiversity, natural resource management and spatial planning. I welcome the theme of the European Cultural Heritage Days 2022 - "Sustainable Heritage", as it represents a relevant opportunity to raise awareness of the fight against environmental degradation and climate change, as well as to develop a culture of sustainability, in order to protect the diversity of cultures - states the General Secretary of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, in the joint press release of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

Throughout September, various activities (exhibitions, workshops, performances, organized guided tours) are taking place all over Europe, which promote sustainable heritage, at the same time highlighting the importance of natural assets and biodiversity.

– This year we celebrate heritage through the prism of sustainability, which could not be more relevant, after the obvious and dramatic signs of climate change, which our continent went through this summer. In that sense, the European Cultural Heritage Days represent an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the risks facing the environment, as part of our shared heritage, and to take sustainable and responsible action for its protection. Not only for our own sake and to protect our cultural identity, but also to be sure that we will leave a legacy for future generations - said Maria Gabriel, European Commissioner for Education, Culture and Youth.

In our country, the European Days of Cultural Heritage will be organized in the period from September 22 to 28, 2022. Twenty museums, civic associations and other institutions from fourteen cities and villages throughout the country will take part in the event.
