The European Statistical Office Eurostat announced that at the end of 2021 a significant population of livestock was counted among the member states. In December 2021, there were 142 million pigs, 76 million cattle, 60 million sheep and 11 million goats in the EU. But, according to the European Statistical Institute, most of the livestock in Europe is reflected in only a few countries.
"Most of the EU livestock is raised in only a few EU member states. In general, the larger Member States raised the most livestock. "Spain raises 24 percent of pigs in the EU, while 9 percent of cattle in the EU, 25 percent of sheep in the EU and 23 percent of goats in the EU," Eurostat said in a statement.
Nine percent of the total number of pigs in the EU are in France, as well as 23 percent of cattle in the union, 12 percent of sheep in the EU and 12 percent of goats. Germany also has a solid share of the total, with 17 percent of EU pigs, 15 percent cattle, XNUMX percent sheep and XNUMX percent goats raised.
"There were other member states that were relatively specialized. Denmark accounts for 9% of the pig population in the EU and the Netherlands 9%. Ireland accounts for 17 percent of the EU bovine population. Romania accounts for 25% of the EU sheep population. "Most goats are bred in Greece, and the goat population there accounts for XNUMX percent of the EU goat population," Eurostat said in a statement.
