The European Parliament has approved a one-year suspension of customs duties on Ukrainian goods
The European Parliament today voted in favor of a one-year suspension of customs duties on imports of goods from Ukraine in order to support the economy of that war-torn country.
515 members of the European Parliament voted in favor of this temporary measure, 32 were against and 11 abstained.
The measure covers the suspension of customs duties on imports of industrial products, fruits, vegetables and steel.
The EU is Ukraine's most important trading partner, accounting for more than 40% of its trade last year. Prior to the war, Ukraine was the EU's 15th largest trading partner, accounting for about 1,2% of its trade.
In 2016, the EU and Ukraine signed an association agreement aimed at opening up Ukrainian markets and deepening the country's ties with Europe.
