EU on the developments in Kosovo: There is already too much violence in Europe, we will not allow a new conflict
The authorities in Pristina must stop the actions of the special police around the municipal buildings in the northern part of Kosovo, and the violent protests must stop, said today in Brussels the high representative of the EU for foreign policy and security. Joseph Borrell.
"The EU strongly condemns the violence in the north of Kosovo that we have seen in the past days. Violent actions against citizens, media, law enforcement and KFOR soldiers are absolutely unacceptable and lead to a very dangerous situation. "The EU firmly stands behind the NATO KFOR mission in fulfilling its mandate in the interest of peace and stability in Kosovo," Borel pointed out.
He added that he is working on organizing an urgent dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina at a high level with the support of the EU special representative Miroslav Lajcak, in order to immediately stop the escalation and violence.
"Any further unilateral action must be avoided and peace must be established." As a first step, I expect the Kosovo authorities to end police operations focused on municipal buildings in northern Kosovo and for the violent protesters to withdraw. I will continue to cooperate with the two leaders," Borrell said.
He stated that he spoke with the Serbian president last night Aleksandar Vuќi,, and this morning with the Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti he asked both of them to "immediately take measures to de-escalate tensions immediately and unconditionally".
Borrell emphasized that "there is already too much violence in Europe" and that the EU will not allow a new conflict
