The EU recorded the highest number of asylum seekers in July since the beginning of the pandemic
About 45.000 asylum applications were filed in the European Union, Norway and Switzerland in July, the highest number since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the DPA reported.
These preliminary figures were released today by the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), which said that a month earlier, in June, about 40.600 people had applied for asylum status.
The Malta-based agency estimates that there are more applications, especially from Afghan nationals. One month before the country fell to the radical Taliban and dramatic weeks of evacuations, there were about 7.300 applications from the country, and in June 6.000 Afghans applied for asylum in the EU, Norway and Switzerland.
Of the approximately 45.000 asylum seekers, 2.200 were unaccompanied minors, and as many as 1.200 came from Afghanistan. Applications from unaccompanied minors have not been registered to such an extent since November 2016, adds DPA.
