EU suspends flights from South Africa over new strain

EU member states have agreed to temporarily suspend travel from South Africa to the Union after a new variant of the coronavirus was discovered, the Slovenian presidency of the EU Council announced. transmits Politico.

The committee, which brings together health workers from 27 member states, "agreed on the need to activate the emergency brake and impose time limits on all travel from South Africa to the EU," the Slovenian presidency said on Twitter.

All Member States are also called upon to test all travelers coming from those countries and to introduce mandatory quarantine. Earlier, the European Commission proposed to EU member states to suspend flights from South Africa and other countries where a new variant of the coronavirus has been discovered.

Air traffic with these countries should be suspended until we find out what the danger is of the new variant. Passengers returning from these areas must abide by strict quarantine rules, said EC President Ursula von der Layen.
