The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, wrote on Twitter last night that the European Union (EU) condemns the imprisonment of the American journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia on charges of espionage.

"Journalists should be able to freely perform their profession and deserve to be protected. "The Russian authorities once again show their systematic disrespect for the freedom of the media," Borel wrote.

The Russian Security Service (FSB) announced yesterday that a correspondent of the American newspaper "Wall Street Journal" was arrested on suspicion of espionage in favor of Washington.

According to reports, the FSB uncovered the "illegal activities" of Evan Gershkovich, an accredited correspondent for the American newspaper, who worked in the Moscow newsroom.
