The EU is discussing a potential increase in gas supplies
The European Union talks with partners on potential increase in gas supplies to European bloc, Energy Commissioner says today Kadri Simson after a meeting with European energy ministers in the French city of Amiens.
The shortage of gas in Europe, blamed on Russia, has led to a jump in energy prices, while Moscow denies manipulating supplies.
Simpson said he would attend conferences in Azerbaijan and Washington in February to discuss ways to increase gas supplies to Europe.
"The level of stored gas in the EU is significantly lower than usual at this time of year," she said.
At a meeting in Amiens, the ministers discussed market uncertainty caused by the Ukraine crisis and the significant drop in gas supplies from Russia in recent months, Simpson said.
"My message is that Europe has a strong, well-diversified and resilient gas infrastructure and clear procedures for solidarity in the event of an emergency," she said.
- But we must remain extremely vigilant, improve our willingness to take risks and strengthen solidarity among Member States, added Simpson.
