The European Union has approved 261 million euros in funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The European Commission stated in a statement that it adopted a three-year contribution in the amount of 261 million euros "to provide the Agency with predictable financial resources for providing basic services to Palestinian refugees."

The already agreed 246 million euros in financial aid was supplemented by another 15 million to mitigate the impact of the instability surrounding food supplies, aggravated by the war in Ukraine, the statement said.

"Our support for UNRWA is a key element in our strategy to contribute to security, stability and development in the region, which also helps preserve the prospects for sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians," said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Josep Borrell.

In the period between 2021 and 2024, the EU plans to provide a total of 1,15 billion euros in financial aid to the Palestinian Authority and UNRWA.
