Experts warn that the heat wave that has caused severe drought and forest fires across the European Union could last for another three months.

"The western Euro-Mediterranean region is likely to be warm and dry until November 2022, especially in Spain and Portugal," said an August report by the EU's Copernicus Earth observation program.

Almost half of the EU is under a drought warning, with conditions worsening in Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and Spain.

The report also states the increased risk of drought outside the EU: in Great Britain, Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova.

It added that a lack of rain and a series of heat waves since May had led to drought and lowering of river levels, which also affected the energy sector.
