The EU is looking for gas from Azerbaijan
EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson intends to talk to in early February Azerbaijan about the possibility of increase gas supplies to Europe, writes Financial Times, citing unnamed European officials.
The EU fears that Russia could cut gas supplies to Europe in response to Western sanctions in the event of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, the newspaper said.
"The EU plans to send a delegation to Azerbaijan in the hope of organizing an urgent gas supply," the statement said.
One of the interlocutors of the publication pointed out that Brussels is negotiating with some Asian countries for possible deliveries of liquefied natural gas.
Earlier, a spokesman for the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Ibrahim Ahmadov, said Baku was considering expanding gas supplies to Europe.
