Speaking of the Marmaris forest firefighter, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said today that the introduction of the death penalty for arsonists should be discussed.

"On June 21, 2022, a forest fire broke out in Marmaris. The intervention prevented further spread of the fire. Fifteen planes and 15 helicopters took part in the firefighting effort. "I would like to thank all our teams here for their hard work," Erdogan said, noting that there was no loss of life.

"The forest fires in Dalaman, Fethiye, Kaichegiz and Sejdikemer have been brought under control. We did not lose any lives in the fire. From the other provinces, with the coordination of AFAD, 271 vehicles were awarded. Romania and Israel asked for support from aircraft with the European Civil Protection Mechanism, but did not respond. A plane from Azerbaijan and 3 helicopters from Qatar took part. The General Directorate of Forestry resumed operations with 14 aircraft and 25 helicopters. "Our health teams identified 47 people and they were discharged from hospitals."

Announcing that work on extinguishing and cooling continues, President Erdogan continued:

"Most of those evacuated have returned to safe areas. A total of 344 people are cared for. A total of 467 animals and 52 vehicles were evacuated. Financial assistance has been provided to households evacuated due to a fire in the Marmaris area.

"The death penalty should be discussed," Erdogan added.

Stating that the person who caused the fire had been arrested, President Erdogan said: "Not only forests but also animals have been damaged by this fire. Sultan Fatih says: "I will shoot in the neck of anyone who cuts a tree from my forest. This needs to be discussed. "The issue of the death penalty should be discussed and emphasized."

The death penalty in Turkey was abolished in 2004, in line with EU entry requirements, where the country has had candidate status for decades.

For now, there is no comment on whether such a decision, which is contrary to EU standards, Turkey will officially end the European path, ie it will officially give up joining the EU.
