The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today that it will run again in the presidential elections scheduled for June 2023, in the first official announcement, reports the agency Anatolia.

"I am saying here that Tayyip Erdogan is the People's Alliance candidate for president," Erdogan told supporters in Izmir.

After nearly 20 years in power, Erdogan's conservative Islamic Justice and Development Party (AKP) will go to the polls amid a growing currency crisis, the highest inflation rate in two decades and rising unemployment, among other problems.

The opposition also accuses Erdogan of stepping up intimidation of potential political rivals in the context of the 2023 elections.

AKP and MHP formed an alliance in the 2018 elections, when Erdogan was re-elected with even greater powers
