All on the scales, then on the plane: "Air New Zealand" will measure the weight of passengers

More than 10.000 passengers flying on Air New Zealand during June will be asked to step on a scale before boarding their flight. The airline wants those traveling on its international network to take part in a passenger weight survey.

It is an "essential" initiative to ensure the "safe and efficient operation of aircraft", according to Air New Zealand, and is also a requirement of the National Civil Aviation Authority, writes "The Independent", reports H1 Info.

Passengers on domestic flights were measured in 2021, and now that international travel has resumed after the pandemic, it's time to measure those on international flights as well.

It has previously been written that weighing every passenger before a flight can increase safety and reduce the environmental damage caused by each flight.

Currently, airlines use "assumed mass", estimating the total weight of passengers using standard figures.

The carrier wants to reassure passengers who may be hesitant about being weighed – while holding their hand luggage – that they have nothing to worry about. "It's completely anonymous," said Alastair James, Air New Zealand's control specialist.
