An explosion demolished part of a building in The Hague, at least 20 people were trapped under the rubble

At least 20 people were trapped in the rubble after a powerful explosion destroyed a three-story apartment building in the Mariahoev neighborhood of The Hague.

The explosion occurred this morning at 6:15 a.m., after which a fire broke out and parts of the building collapsed, and five to seven apartments were completely destroyed, reports "NL Times".

Rescue services, including specialist Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams, four guide dogs and civil engineers attended the scene.

So far, at least four people have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals.

The explosion also caused serious damage to nearby buildings, and several streets in the area were closed for safety reasons.

An investigation into the causes of the explosion is underway.
