EC: Renewable energy surpassed fossil fuels in the EU in 2020

EU members saw a 48 per cent increase in investment in renewable energy last year, and in 2020 surpassed fossil fuels as the continent's main energy source, said EU Commissioner Kadri Simpson.

Simpson told a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg that investments in renewable energy in 2019 amounted to 32,9, and a year later 48,8 billion euros, an increase of 48,3 percent.

Renewable energy sources surpassed fossil fuels as the main source of energy for the first time last year, with 38% compared to 37% of electricity produced, according to data from the European Commission.

Simpson, the EC's energy commissioner, also said the entire EU, as well as individual countries, were on track to meet the 40 per cent target for renewable energy by 2030.
