One of the most famous beaches in Greece will be closed to tourists this summer
Navagio beach on the island of Zakynthos will be closed to visitors, i.e. swimmers and tourists, this summer due to fear of additional landslides. The decision to ban access to Navagio Beach was recommended by a team of experts from the Organization for Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection (OASP), following a visit to the site on March 8 as part of a regular reassessment of its safety.
The OASP team said there is a significant risk of landslides due to the erosion of the surrounding rocks.
"The safety of residents and visitors is above all and the decision was made taking into account the new scientific data of the OASP and its president, Professor Efthimios Lekas, given the large number of visitors to this area during the tourist season," says Minister Vassilis Kikilias.
Navagio Beach on the island of Zakynthos has been closed to locals and visitors since September last year after a magnitude 5,4 earthquake caused large boulders from surrounding rocks to fall into the bay.
Beach safety will be reassessed twice a year.
Navagio Beach, visited by millions of tourists, ranks the island of Zakynthos as perhaps the most photographed summer destination on the planet and has become a symbol of the island. At first it was feared that the wreckage of this ship represented a stain on the pristine beach, until then difficult to access, but it was decided to stay where it is.
