Joseph: The US gave the green light to Aleksandar Vucic to escalate the situation in Kosovo

The USA went too far with the criticism of the Kosovo authorities who wanted to implement the newly elected mayors in their places, said Edward Joseph, a political analyst from Washington and an expert on the Balkans.

As the correspondent of MIA reported, the USA and the EU previously called that the official Pristina is destabilizing the situation in the country.

- By the fact that the USA went too far saying that relations with Kosovo will be damaged by this, they gave the green light to Vucic to escalate and accuse Albin Kurti, said Joseph in an interview with Al Jazeera.

He added that the Kosovo prime minister may deserve criticism, that the US went too far after Washington made it clear that relations with Pristina would be damaged because of the four mayors.

-According to the law, Kosovo is right. They have the right to do so, the Serbs boycotted these elections that led to the election of these four mayors, said Joseph.

-Aleksandar Vucic escalated the situation in Kosovo even though he de facto agreed to recognition in March (at the negotiations in Ohrid) thanks to the mediation of the EU and the USA.

Raising tensions is the last thing that both Kosovo and Serbia should do, said Joseph.

- But this tense situation suits Vucic, who is under a lot of pressure at home, with unprecedented mass demonstrations against his government. He wants to present himself as a great patriot, defender of Kosovo and the Kosovo Serbs, precisely at a time when he is under enormous pressure at home, he said.
