As he writes Hollywood Reporter, Al Pacino in the eighties wanted to make a film about the mentioned painter together with the famous director Martin Scorsese, but in the end they abandoned the project.

No casting details have been released yet, but since Modigliani died at the age of 35, it's unlikely that Depp or Pacino will play the artist.

The film will be adapted from Dennis McIntyre's 1979 play The Modigliani.

Set in 1916 during a critical period in the painter's life, it also features fellow artists Maurice Utrillo and Chaim Soutine, as well as the poet Beatrice Hastings, who was Modigliani's lover at the time. It will be Depp's second film as a director, 25 years after his 1995 western Brave, in which he starred alongside Marlon Brando.
