Ahead of the inauguration of new President Joe Biden, 12 members of the National Guard were fired after being found to be linked to right-wing extremist groups or posting extremist views online, US media reported, citing two unnamed officials.

They added that there was no direct threat to Biden.

The unnamed officers, members of the intelligence service and the military familiar with the situation, did not specify which extremist groups were involved or in which unit the members of the National Guard served.

Prior to Biden's inauguration, the FBI conducted a security check on 25.000 National Guard personnel sent to Washington to secure the event, amid concerns of a potential "insider" attack.
