Two dementia residents flee Tennessee nursing home thanks to military training, staff fined

The Elmcroft Institution in Lebanon, Tennessee, has to pay a $ 2.000 fine because they do not know where the two tenants went missing on March 2. The fugitives, an unidentified couple, suffer from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, but they appear to have retained some of their memory as their wife used her Morse code military training to break the institution's electrical lock, Fox News reported.

The husband listened while the staff entered the code and managed to "read" the scheme. He and his wife escaped and were released just half an hour before a passerby found them wandering two blocks away.

Staff have been planning to increase security in their room since February, after the husband began displaying disturbing habits, such as wandering around and looking for a way out.

He had time to walk outside to get rid of those habits, but he failed.

- The safety of our residents is a top priority of our community of the elderly. "We are grateful that both residents returned safely to the community," Elmcroft said in a statement, adding that authorities and the family of the two fugitives had been informed immediately after their disappearance and that the institution had fully cooperated with the state.

Here is what the institution from which the couple fled looks like.
