Two Italian intelligence officers and a retired member of the Israeli security forces were among the four victims of a boat accident Sunday on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, local authorities said, reports "BBC".

They named the Italians as Claudio Alonzi (62) and Tiziana Barnobi (53). The Israeli was identified as Shimoni Erez (50). Anja Bozhkova, the 50-year-old Russian woman, wife of the ship's captain, also died.

The boat with more than 20 tourists and crew sank as a result of the strong wind. According to Italian media, the boat was carrying about 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when a storm developed over the lake, which later turned into a "small hurricane".

The 16-meter-long boat capsized and sank on Sunday evening between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona. Everyone on board ended up in the water, but many of the passengers swam ashore or were rescued by other boats.

Rescue divers attempted to assist in the search at the southern end of the lake, and several ambulances and the air ambulance attended the scene.

Lake Maggiore – on the southern side of the Alps – is shared by Italy and Switzerland and is a popular destination for tourists. Bad weather has recently been reported in the area, and Italy's meteorological service has issued a thunderstorm warning.
