Diseases of the cardiovascular system are one of the most common causes of death in the world – they are responsible for about a quarter of all deaths.

There are a number of factors that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Some are genetics and age, and some are influenced by lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise and smoking. writes "Express".

A new study found that gout, a type of arthritis, is associated with a 58 percent higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

The risk is even higher for women and those under 45 who have the condition, according to the researchers.

Gout is an extremely painful condition that causes swelling and redness of the joints and is one of the most common types of inflammatory arthritis in the world. It is more common in men and the elderly, but it can also affect women and younger people.

The two main symptoms of gout:

Sudden severe joint pain – usually in the big toe, but can also be in other joints of the feet, ankles, hands, wrists, elbows or knees.

Warm, swollen, red skin on the affected joint.

Previous studies have linked gout to cardiovascular disease risk, but this is the first time researchers have looked at the wide range of diseases covered in such a large study.

As part of this study, the team analyzed data from more than 152.000 people with gout along with more than 700.000 matched controls.
