Even mild covid-19 can increase the risk of dangerous diseases, appearing several months after infection

New research published in the journal "nature" indicates the dangers that even a mild infection with the coronavirus can bring to us even a year after the infection.

The study reveals that the effect of the virus can be devastating many months after the initial infection, reports Express.

It is about the risk of cardiovascular problems after covid-19.

The journal article cites a study published earlier this year that used records from the US Department of Veterans Affairs to assess how often covid-19 leads to cardiovascular problems.

They found that people who were infected with the coronavirus faced a 20 percent higher risk of cardiovascular problems, including potentially dangerous problems such as heart attack and stroke.

The analysis of Dr Ziyad Al-Ali, epidemiologist of University of Washington in Saint Louis, and colleagues is one of the most comprehensive efforts to characterize what happens to the heart and cardiovascular system after the acute phase of covid-19.

The researchers compared more than 150.000 cases who recovered from covid-19 with their uninfected peers, as well as with a control group before the pandemic.

People who were admitted to intensive care with acute infections had a dramatically higher risk of cardiovascular problems over the next year.

For some conditions, such as swelling of the heart and blood clots in the lungs, the risk increased by at least 20 percent compared to those who did not have covid-19.

But even people who were not hospitalized had an increased risk of many conditions, ranging from an eight percent increased rate of heart attacks to up to a 247 percent increased rate of inflammation of the heart.

For Dr. Al-Ali, the study also provided more evidence that Covid can permanently change the health of some people.

"Research shows that the coronavirus is associated with a wide range of permanent problems, such as diabetes, permanent lung damage, and even brain damage," reports Nature magazine.

As with these conditions, Dr. Al-Ali said that cardiovascular problems that occur after infection with the novel coronavirus can permanently reduce a person's quality of life.
