More than 90 percent of the textbooks have been delivered, says Shaqiri, and promised that the deadline will be met next year

More than 90 percent of the textbooks have been delivered for the first, second, fourth and fifth grades - the classes in which children learn according to new curricula in accordance with the Concept for Basic Education from 2020, Minister Jeton Shaqiri said today and announced that the last textbooks are also being delivered these days what were missing.

Next year, with new curricula, according to the Conception, the third and sixth grades will be covered, and Shaqiri assures that all textbooks will be delivered on September 1, that is, the deadlines will be met. At the beginning of the academic year 2022/2023, due to the delay of textbooks, students in these classes received learning materials for the first trimester.

Answering journalist's questions after signing a memorandum of cooperation with the OSCE, Shaqiri informed that for the first grade, textbooks have been delivered for all subjects and for all teaching languages, except for the subject Society, which was approved by the National Commission for Textbooks last week.

- It was not approved due to some legal procedures, remarks of the review committee and other committees involved in the procedure for approving a textbook. In order to continue printing, it has to go through an appeals process within 15 days from other authors if they are not satisfied with the decision to select the textbook, Shaqiri said.

In the second grade, all textbooks have been distributed, except for the subjects Mathematics and Society, which, he said, will be delivered to all schools today and tomorrow. For the fourth grade, as he said, all textbooks have been delivered, and for the fifth, except for the Macedonian language. For this subject, the minister clarified, not a single author was registered on the two announcements by the National Commission for Textbooks and the Pedagogical Service, and a group of authors has been formed.

For the coming school year, according to the Concept, there should be new curricula for the third and sixth grades and, according to them, new textbooks should be prepared.

- For the third grade, the call for authors was announced in November. The call for the sixth grade has not been released yet because we are waiting for the curricula. When the Education Development Bureau delivers them, the call for authors for textbooks will be published immediately. With the completion of the third and sixth after the new Conception, I think we will have all the textbooks in September because we have no excuse for the deadlines that are legal, Shaqiri added.

Regarding the corrections in the textbooks in use, for which the MES opened an e-mail address for reactions from the public and reporting errors, it replied that comments were received for two textbooks - for the abbreviation DUI in the textbook for the Albanian language subject for the fifth grade.

He said that a decision was made for correction by the Pedagogical Service and a correction was made in the electronic form of the textbook, and that a way will be found to provide additional material for correction of the textbooks in printed form that are with the students.

Regarding the textbook on the subject of History and Society for the fifth grade, in which incorrect data was found, he clarified that the remarks that reached the Ministry of Education and Culture were sent to the authors, and announced a call for reviewers, to which no one applied.

– When authors accept or reject comments, reviewers need to evaluate and see the material better. If there are no applications for the second reviewer announcement, I will ask the Pedagogical Service to inform the National Commission about the situation with that textbook and then it will make a decision according to the law - what if no reviewers have applied: can the textbook be withdrawn and who are other legal obligations, said Shaqiri.

When asked by a journalist whether the negotiations for the entry of the Alliance for Albanians into the Government also discuss the department of education, Shaqiri answered that he is not in the negotiating team.

- I am not in the negotiating teams. The media, as always, will be promptly notified of any information, regardless of what it will be, Shaqiri said.
