Deutsche Welle: The shame of the EU called Oliver Varhei

The European Union, ie the European Commission as its executive body, over the years has made so many gaffes and mistakes when it comes to Macedonia, so many unfulfilled and empty promises have been made, that they can no longer be healed. But never, or at least such was the impression from both sides, those "incidents" were not consciously intended to damage the credibility of the EU, on the one hand, and the dignity of Macedonia, on the other, writes Boris Georgievski in a comment to the Deutsche editorial office. they say "in Macedonian language.

The current Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhei, on Thursday, with a tweet managed to destroy the credibility of the institution that represents the dignity of the country for whose progress, seemingly, he is fighting.

"The EU takes all Bulgarian concerns very seriously and they are now part of the negotiation process," Varhei tweeted, adding a dose of pathos calling for "responsible decisions", "The Western Balkans should be part of our EU" and finally, "We will be stronger together. "

The purpose of this Varchei tweet is simple, and the consequences are multiple for everyone.

First, to completely dismantle the negotiation process by destroying the positions of the Macedonian side. Even if the Macedonian government had openly accepted the "French proposal", which, after this tweet by Varchei, would have dared to defend it and say, as we have been told so far in silence, that this is a compromise proposal of a neutral negotiator who takes into account the positions of both sides?

Furthermore, who in Macedonia, after Varhei's statement, regardless of whether the proposal was accepted or rejected, will believe that Brussels has sincere intentions and takes into account the interests of both the member state and the candidate country? We were aware of the asymmetry in those relations so far, as we were aware during the decade-long dispute with Greece. But, according to this tweet of the Hungarian commissioner, the EU for many in Macedonia is the same as Bulgaria - a bully who wants to impose his, in this case Bulgarian, interests and views.

And finally, Varheji with one tweet managed to achieve what, despite great efforts, he has not succeeded in recent years since taking office: To publicly spit in the face of all EU supporters, all pro-Western forces in Macedonia who with They have been fighting for decades to pull the country out of the Balkan mud, to all those who have pledged their careers to overcome disputes with neighboring countries. And that, it seems, was his main point. To inflame the anti-European feelings among the citizens and to strengthen the anti-Western forces in Macedonia.

Varheji succeeded in the fact that no Macedonian, not even European, politician in the past 30 years has succeeded in uniting the citizens, but unfortunately, in the hatred towards the EU. The only thing that the Enlargement Commissioner has managed to "expand" in his mandate is the gap between the EU and the countries aspiring to it.

To whom and why it suits, it is not at all difficult to read. If Varheji comes to represent the EU, I wonder who needs such an EU? Except for his boss, Viktor Orban. If the European Commission keeps silent about this, Varhei's shame becomes the shame of the EU.
