The strategic cooperation agreement between Russia and Iran does not provide for a mutual defense clause

The strategic cooperation agreement that Russia and Iran are to sign will not have a mutual defense clause, as the agreements signed with Moscow and Pyongyang do.

"The nature of this agreement is different. They (Belarus and North Korea) have established partnership relations (with Moscow) in a number of areas that we did not negotiate. The independence and security of our country, as well as its autonomy, are extremely important. We are not interested in joining any bloc," said Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali.

He added that Iran will guarantee its own security.

Russia has signed partnership agreements with North Korea and Belarus, which include a provision for mutual defense.

The presidents of Russia and Iran, Vladimir Putin and Masoud Pezeshkian, are scheduled to sign the long-awaited Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement on January 17.
