Johnny Rotten: "The series will ruin the reputation of the Sex Pistols"

Johnny Rotten

Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten said in an interview that the television series about the cult British punk band was being filmed without his consent or any contribution and talked about the personal struggle he was going through caring for his wife with Alzheimer's disease.

Last week, FH Television announced the filming of a six-episode miniseries called The Pistol, which will "revive" the memoirs of guitarist Steve Jones from 2016's "Lonely Boy: Sex Pistol Tales." The series is directed and produced by Danny Boyle ("The Poor Millionaire") and written by Craig Pierce and Frank Cottrell Boys.
But the band's frontman, John Lidon, better known by his stage name Johnny Rotten, is not happy with the idea. He said in an interview with British radio that he feared that the new series, to be directed by Oscar winner Boyle, would try to tarnish the band's reputation and legacy, and should be considered a "poisonous act".

- I know nothing about it, nothing at all. "No one has done anything to convince me or ask for my consent and contribution in any way and in any form," said a disappointed Johnny.

- They will try to ruin the reputation of something so wonderful. It is very dangerous what they do, without any respect. "We will see if they call us soon and want to talk," he added.
A spokesman for the television network said the series' authors and Boyle had contacted Rotten's agent to inform him of the miniseries due to begin filming in March. The Sex Pistols were founded in London in 1975 and changed British society and culture forever. They are credited with the punk movement in Britain.

In the interview, Johnny also talked about the private problems he faces, which are related to the care of his wife Nora, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. He first spoke publicly about this in 2018, when she was diagnosed. Despite the challenges, today the 64-year-old musician said that the most important thing for him is Nora, with whom he has been married since 1979, to be at home and happy with him.

- It is physically and mentally exhausting. I hardly sleep at all, but most importantly she is happy. Nora has an incredible sense of humor, and everyone who knows me knows how much I love humor, so that makes things easier for us - he says and admits that taking care of a sick wife takes its toll on his health.

- I do not take care of myself. I can not even go to an eye doctor to check my eyesight - he reveals and adds that he tried to pay nurses who would take care of Nora, to take her to a home where they take care of people with Alzheimer's disease, but he gave up after he would see that Nora only trusts him.
But John will have to take care of his wife while he is on the tour he announced for August, in order to promote his new book. The promotion was originally planned for last year, but was canceled due to the corona pandemic.

- I do not know what it will be like in August when I go on tour. I have to find quality care for Nora in time. Going on tour is mandatory, and she is not allowed to travel. Crowds, flashlights, and the like, cause her to panic. People who want to help may take the wrong step, and Nora's reaction will be "he wants to kill me" - Johnny is worried.
