A new variant of the coronavirus is spreading in the Republic of South Africa, which is causing concern, DPA reported.

The first 22 cases of the new variant, B., have been discovered in South Africa. 1.1.529, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) announced yesterday Thursday.

Additional cases are expected as the genomic analysis continues, the NICD said.

"Although the data are limited, our experts work overtime with all the surveillance systems in place to understand the new variant and what the potential implications may be," said NICD chief Adrian Puren.

Health Minister Joe Falla said the new variant confirmed the unpredictable nature of the coronavirus.

He urged South Africans to keep a physical distance and wear masks. Vaccinations are also a critical protective tool, he said.
