The Venerable Martyr John and others with him

They are from the family of Saint Sava the Consecrated in Jerusalem. This famous monastery still exists today. It has been attacked many times by wild Arabs, but by God's Providence it has always been restored and preserved to this day. During the reigns of Constantine and Irina, the Arabs attacked and plundered it. The monks did not want to flee, but after consulting with their abbot Thomas said: "We fled the world into this wilderness for the love of Christ. It is a shame to run away from the desert for fear of people. "If they kill us here, we will be killed because of our love for Christ, because of whom we came to live here." Some of them were killed by the Arabs with arrows, some were imprisoned in the cave of St. Sava, and then ordered fire at the entrance and suffocated them with smoke. And so many of them ended up as martyrs of Christ and moved to the Kingdom of the One they loved. They suffered honorably before Easter 796 during the reigns of Constantine and Irina, when Elijah was the patriarch of Jerusalem. The savage attackers were soon punished fairly. On the way back to their tents, they quarreled and killed each other. This happened in 796.
