Great leader and legislator of the people of Israel. He was born in Egypt, around 1550 BC. For forty years he lived in Egypt at Pharaoh's palace, for forty years he lived as a shepherd in contemplation of God and the world, and for the last forty years he led the people through the wilderness into the Promised Land, which he saw but did not enter, because in one sin against God (Num. 4:20,12). He died in the one hundred and twentieth year of his life. As a miracle worker, in the words of St. Basil the Great, Moses was an image of Christ. He appeared on Mount Tabor at the Transfiguration of the Lord. And according to the testimony of St. John the Ladder, he appeared to the monks in the monastery of Sinai.
