Today is the first day of spring: Here's why it doesn't come on March 21 anymore
Officially today, March 20, in 16:33 p.m. the most beautiful season begins - spring, when the equinox occurs, which heralds the end of winter. On today's date night and day will be of equal length. We learned that all seasons, except autumn, begin on 21 per montht, but spring has been arriving for about two decades a day earlier.
The most beautiful time of the year begins at the vernal equinox, when night and day last the same, twelve hours each. And from today and every day will be longer.
Why does the date of the first day of spring change?
The vernal equinox can fall anytime in between 19.03. and 21.03. – depending on when the Sun will be above the Earth's equator. There are two different methods that determine the beginning and end of the seasons - meteorological and astronomical.
The meteorological method - meteorologists observe the annual drops and rises in temperature, as well as the state of the atmosphere. This is determined climatologically, by tracking temperature statistics, and coordinates with the calendar – to divide the seasons into four three-month seasons. According to this method, each season lasts for three months.
The second astronomical method is based on – astronomical seasons and refers to the position of the Earth's orbit in relation to the Sun. According to this method, the astronomical calendar determines the seasons according to when the Earth's rotation axis is at 23,5 degrees relative to the orbit around the Sun.
So, this year, spring arrives today afternoon.
