Today the Holy Seven Newlyweds are celebrated in Ephesus

The holy seven newlyweds in Ephesus

In the time of Emperor Decius there was a great persecution of Christians. The emperor himself came to Ephesus and here he prepared a glorious and noisy celebration of the dead idols, but also a terrible slaughter of the Christians. Seven boys, soldiers, refrained from the profane sacrifice and fervently prayed to God, the One, to save the Christian race. They were the sons of the most eminent elders of Ephesus, and their names were: Maximilian Jamvlich, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodian and Antoninus. When they were accused by the king, they took refuge on the hill Ochlon behind the city of Ephesus, where they hid in a cave. When the emperor learned of this, he ordered the wall to be built with the boys inside. And God, according to His far-reaching Providence, sent a strange and long-lasting dream upon them. The emperor Theodore and Rufin, who were secret Christians, had a copper coffin with lead plates inscribed with the names of these boys and their martyrdom during the reign of Emperor Decius. More than two hundred years have passed since then. In the time of Emperor Theodosius the Younger (408–450) a great controversy arose over the resurrection of the dead, for there were some who doubted the resurrection. Emperor Theodosius was deeply saddened by this dispute between the faithful and prayed to God to reveal the truth to the people in some way. At that time of the storm in the Church, the shepherds of an Adoli who owned the hill of Ohlon, began to make herds for the sheep and took stone by stone from that cave. Then the newlyweds awoke from their slumber, young and healthy as they had fallen asleep. And this miracle was announced on all sides, so that Emperor Theodosius himself came with a large retinue and spoke kindly to the boys. A week later they fell asleep again in a mortal sleep, awaiting the general resurrection. The emperor wanted to lay their bodies in golden coffins, but they appeared to him in a dream and told him to leave them on the ground as they lay.
