Today is celebrated the Holy Hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite, Bishop of Athens

He is one of the Seventy Apostles. This wonderful man was from a respectable ungodly family in Athens. After graduating from a philosophy school in Athens, he went to Egypt to study further. At that time, one day on the Cross, the Lord Jesus Christ died and the sun was darkened and it was dark in Egypt for three hours. Then Dionysius cried out: "Either God, the Creator of the world, suffers or this world ends." When he returned to Athens, he married Damara and had sons with her. He was a member of the highest court of the Greeks, called Areopagus, which is why it was named Areopagite. When the apostle Paul was preaching the gospel in Athens, Dionysius was baptized with his entire household. He was consecrated by Paul to the Bishop of Athens, because he left his wife and children and position in society because of the love of Christ. He traveled with Paul long enough to meet the other apostles of Christ. He went to Jerusalem in order to see the Most Holy Mother of God and described the meeting with her in one of his works. He was present at the funeral of the Most Pure One along with the other apostles. When his teacher, the holy apostle Paul, was martyred, Dionysius wished for such a death. And he went to preach the gospel among the barbarians in Gaul, together with the high priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleftherios. He suffered a lot, but he also succeeded a lot. For his labor many pagans turned to the faith of Christ. In Paris, Dionysius built a small church in which he served God. When he was ninety years old, he was captured and tortured for Christ, along with Rusticus and Eleftherios, until all three were finally killed with the sword. The severed head of St. Dionysius bounced at a great distance and fell in front of a Christian Catula, who buried her body with her. He suffered in the time of Dometian in 96. He wrote important works: about the mystical theology, about the heavenly and church hierarchy, about the Most Holy Mother of God.
