Day of the All-Slavic educators Saints Cyril and Methodius

Saints Methodius and Cyril co-apostles

Today is celebrated The day of the all-Slavic educators, the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, who are the founders of Slavic literacy and literature and are credited for the cultural development of all Slavic peoples. Because of their merits for Christianity, the Holy Church declared them equal to the apostles.

Although they have special holidays on the day of their repose, they also have a common holiday on May 24/11. At the beginning, the Church separately celebrated the memory of the two brothers, on the days of their repose. Cyril on February 27/14 and St. Methodius on April 19/6, but later the need for their common holiday was realized.

They were born in Thessaloniki, in the family of a high Byzantine official. Their father Lev was an assistant to the commander of the Thessalonica region, and their mother Maria came from a respectable family.

For the two brothers, the most important is the Moravian mission, which is important for the future of all Slavs. The initiative for this mission was given by the Moravian prince Rostislav who, in order to stabilize his country politically, took measures to resolve the church issue. He asked for help from Byzantium to organize the church in his country. He asked to be sent people who would preach the word of God in an understandable Slavic language. He also sought a bishop who would organize the church to become independent of Rome. But Byzantium also had its own interest, so at that time of strained relations in the Christian church itself, and in order to avoid further schism, only missionary teachers sent him, and not a bishop. Those missionaries were Cyril and Methodius.

The Slavs did not have letters then, so Cyril had to compile an alphabet and translate the necessary books into Slavonic. For composing this first Slavic alphabet (Glagolitic), for the first translations from Greek into Slavonic, Cyril used the language of the Macedonian Slavs from Thessaloniki and the surrounding area.

Cyril died in Rome on February 27/14, 869, and today his relics are buried in the Roman church of St. Clement. Methodius died on April 19/6, 885 and was buried in the Moravian capital Velegrad. After the death of Methodius, his disciples were left without protection. Gorazd is lost, some of the students were sold as slaves, others expelled to the south. Saints Clement and Nahum continued the work of their teachers on the shores of Lake Ohrid in the ancient city of Ohrid.

In accordance with the Law on Holidays in the country, May 24 - the Day of the All-Slavic educators brothers Cyril and Methodius is a national holiday and a non-working day for all citizens.
