Holy Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius and Theodulus

Leontius was a Roman duke in the Phoenician city of Tripoli during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. Born of Hellas, "tall, strong, strong, and valiant in battle." The viceroy Adrian sent a detachment to capture Leontius, for he was a fierce adversary and persecutor of Christians. The captain of that detachment, Ipatius, was on his way from a hot fever, so the detachment had to slow down. One night an angel of God appeared to Hypatius, saying: "If you want to be healthy, shout three times to the heavens, you and all your soldiers:" God Leontiev, help me! "Hypatius told this vision to his friends and they all cried out in unison as the angel advised. Ipatius suddenly recovered. This miracle amazed everyone, especially one of them named Theodulus. Then Ipatius and Theodulus went forth to find Duke Leontius. And Leontius received them warmly and entertained them. When he exposed his faith in Christ, their hearts were kindled with love for Him, and at that hour a bright cloud descended over Ipatius and Theodulus, and dew fell on them from the cloud. With this the Spirit of God himself baptized the newly converted souls, and St. Leontius at that moment uttered these words: "In the name of the Most Holy Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." When Hadrian learned that both Ipatius and Theodulus had become Christians, he ordered that they be beaten mercilessly and then beheaded with an ax. Such was the conclusion of those two spiritual children of St. Leontius. Adrian then ordered angry tortures on Leontius, but he remained steadfast in his Holy Faith. His whole body was covered with wounds, but the saint fervently prayed to God not to leave him. In the midst of the most angry torments, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and encouraged and comforted him. Finally they laid the martyr on the ground and beat him until he surrendered his spirit to God. The suffering of St. Leontius was witnessed by a Cyrus Notary, who wrote it all down on lead tablets and laid them on the tomb of the martyr. Saint Leontius suffered honorably in 73.
