Today we celebrate the Holy Apostle Philip

The Holy Apostle Philip

One of the twelve apostles. He was born in Bethsaida by the Sea of Galilee, as Peter and Andrew. From a young scholar of the Scriptures, Philip immediately responded to the call of the Lord Jesus and followed Him (John 1:43). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Philip zealously preached the gospel in many parts of Asia and Greece. In Greece, the Jews wanted to kill him, but with His mighty miracles God saved him. Thus, the Jewish high priest who hurried to beat him suddenly went blind and all blackened. And there was a great earthquake, and the earth opened, and swallowed up Philip the wicked. Many other miracles took place, especially the healing of the sick, which led many pagans to believe in Christ. In the Phrygian city of Hierapolis, St. Philip found himself working together with St. John the Theologian, his sister Mary, and the apostle Bartholomew. There was a dangerous snake there, which the pagans carefully fed and worshiped as if they were God. The apostles of God killed this serpent in prayer. By doing so, they incurred the wrath of the darkened people. The angry pagans captured Philip and crucified him on a tree, then crucified Bartholomew. Then the country opened up and swallowed the judge and many others with him. In great fear, the people rushed to take down the apostles. But they managed to bring down only Bartholomew alive, Philip had already died. To the baptized, Bartholomew appointed Bishop Stachys, whom he and Philip had previously healed from blindness and baptized. Stachys was blind for forty years. Later, the relics of St. Philip were transported to Rome. This magnificent apostle suffered in 86 CE during the reign of Emperor Dometian.
