David Lynch had a turbulent love life, married four times: His last wife filed for divorce before his death

David Lynch, the legendary film director and screenwriter, has died at the age of 78. In addition to the films and series that shaped the art world, the public will also remember him for his private life, which was filled with many love stories. Namely, David was married four times, and before his death he was in the process of divorcing Emily Stoffle, with whom he has an 11-year-old daughter, Lulu.

Peggy Lenz

Lynch's first wife was Peggy Lenz, whom he married in 1967. The couple met while Lynch was studying at the Art Institute of Boston, where they shared a passion for art. Their marriage lasted seven years, and in 1968 they had a daughter, Jennifer Chambers Lynch.

Jennifer, like her father, became a respected film director, known for her unconventional and bold visions. Although they divorced in 1974, Peggy and David maintained a mutual respect, and Jennifer continued to maintain a close relationship with her father.

Mary Fisk

In 1977, Lynch began a new relationship with Mary Fisk, who became his second wife. Mary came from a family involved in the film industry, and their relationship began while Lynch was working on his early film projects.

Their marriage lasted 10 years, during which Lynch had his first major professional successes, including the film "Eraserhead." The couple had a son, Austin Jack Lynch (42), who later appeared occasionally in his father's projects. Although the marriage ended in 1987, they remained on friendly terms.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Lynch had a high-profile relationship with actress Isabella Rossellini. Despite much writing about it, their relationship did not result in marriage.

Mary Sweeney

His shortest marriage was to Mary Sweeney, whom he married in May 2006 and divorced in July of that year. Their relationship was special, as they collaborated on film projects for years, including the cult series Twin Peaks, where Mary worked as a producer and editor.

The couple were close both professionally and personally, and their romance naturally grew out of that relationship. Together they had a son, Riley Sweeney Lynch, who inherited his father's penchant for art.

Emily Stoffle

David's fourth and final wife was Emily Stoffle. They met in 2006 on the set of his film Inland Empire, in which Emily starred. She also worked with Lynch on the series Twin Peaks: The Return, and their professional collaboration soon blossomed into a romantic relationship, and they married on February 26, 2009, and in 2012 they had a daughter, Lulu Boginia Lynch.

However, Emily filed for divorce in December 2023, after 14 years of marriage, seeking full custody of their daughter.

As a reminder, the news of the death of the legendary David Lynch was announced by his family on Facebook.

"It is with deep sadness that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There is a great void in the world now that he is no longer with us. And, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the doughnut, not the hole.' A beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies," they wrote.

Lynch revealed to the public that he was battling serious health problems caused by years of smoking. In the last months of his life, he used supplemental oxygen for most activities, and as he himself said, even a short walk across the room was a challenge.

"It's like walking around with a plastic bag over your head," he described his condition in a recent interview with People.
