Danes buy coffee grounds?
Norway already allows eco-friendly cruises, Sweden recycles trash so frantically that it runs out, so it has to be imported from other countries, and Denmark, among others, has come up with something else. A company from Copenhagen stood out with an interesting idea, which is implemented by numerous associations for the protection of the environment and the promotion of the eco-lifestyle.
Just think about how much coffee is drunk in the world every day and how much grounds are thrown away every day – both in households and in coffee shops. That residue is useless and not harmful anyway, each of us thinks. But the Danes say: most of the valuable ingredients of coffee remain contained precisely in that residue that is unwillingly thrown away, because the Danes are one of the leading coffee lovers in the world. This is what this company does: they buy coffee grounds from coffee shops and use it to grow mushrooms!
The cooled coffee grounds are mixed with the mycelium, the vegetative part of the mushroom that consists of branching threads, all stored in containers, and the cultivation process takes four weeks.
First, they are stored for three weeks in a warm and dark place that simulates the soil in which they would grow in nature. Then they are moved for a week to cooler rooms with high humidity and more light. Then the oysters start to sprout.
They noticed that it is possible to grow mushrooms multiple times using the same sediment, and when they use it, they give it to local farmers, who can continue to use it.
The mushrooms are grown on an urban farm just a kilometer away from the store where they are sold. But you can also buy mycelium and a starter kit from recycled materials for home growers, so you can grow them yourself in your home. In just one month you will have your own books. Since this form of mushroom cultivation has spread all over the world – it is estimated that there are currently five thousand companies involved in it.
