Do you know why Australia competes in Eurovision?
Many people wonder why Australia participates in the European music competition - Eurovision Song Contest. Geographically it doesn't make any sense, but there is an explanation.
Namely, Eurovision is one of the most watched music shows in Australia. As much as 12 percent of the total viewership comes from this overseas country, so the organizers believed that the viewership could be even higher if that country had its own representative at Eurovision.
Australia first participated in 2015, to mark the 60th edition of Eurovision, and was represented by Guy Sebastian with the song "Tonight Again", which took fifth place in the grand final. The best result for this country at Eurovision was the second place for Ladies Im with the song "Sound of Silence" in 2016.
Australia was originally scheduled to participate only in 2015 (and next year if it won), but the Special Broadcasting Service (SBT) has announced that it will also participate in the competition in 2016.
This year's representatives of Australia are the members of the music group "Voyager", who represent their country with the song "Promise". They performed during the second semi-final night and managed to make it to the grand final, which will take place tonight starting at 21pm.
