The reactions in the public did not subside a few days after the announcement by the local media from Ohrid and Struga that the informal activist Nela Stojanova was attacked by dogs in Struga by a pack and was bitten and injured in the process. A discussion was opened on social networks whether Stojanova is really an activist for animal protection or the information was misused and manipulated to the extent that the problem with dogs is intractable for the authorities, that is, that those who take care of them are also attacked by homeless dogs.

Some of the comments go so far as to say that Stojanova is neither an activist, nor was she connected with any associations for the protection of animals and dogs. Other reactions in the comments on social networks say that the release of this information has a partisan background. Still others claim that they know Nela personally and it is the first time they hear that she is actually an activist for the protection of homeless dogs.

However, from what has been confirmed is the official announcement of the Ministry of Interior on the case. The police published information in their daily bulletin that on January 22.01.2023, 17 at 45:32 p.m., N.S. (15) from Struga reported to the police station that she was bitten by a stray dog on "XNUMX Corps" street in Struga. The information released by the police did not specify whether or not it was a dog protection activist.

Meanwhile, some of the readers who contacted "Sloboden Pechat" say that it is more than obvious that the purpose of the information shared on the portal Ohridnet was to attract as many clicks and reactions as possible on Facebook, and for that reason the news was subtly transmitted to act as if it were new and it states that it is about an informal activist for the protection of stray dogs from Struga.

In the interest of the public, "Sloboden Pechat" tried to get in touch with Stojanova and find out if she is an active member of an association that cares for homeless animals, because she was mentioned as an activist in some of the media. However, even after several of our attempts to get in touch, Stojanova did not answer our questions.

On the other hand, at the same time, we requested the official position of the association for animal protection Anima Mundi for the event. From there they informed us that there are a total of three activists in Struga and they all know them, but they have no information about Stojanova specifically, in which organization she is a member and whether she is a member at all.

- There are many individual activists who keep 40-50 dogs by themselves. In our opinion, the definition of an activist is whether he systematically works on the problem of homeless dogs such as sterilization, castration, vaccination, rehoming. We would not comment on whether the indicated person is an activist or not, but we can say that after it happened with the killing of dogs in Struga, news suddenly began to be published that there were bitten citizens, adds the Association.

Stray dogs are a real problem for Struga

However, it is a fact that the city of Struga has had a problem with stray dogs for a long time, and almost daily photos and videos are published on social networks of packs being tormented by stray dogs, and recently there was a report by the Ministry of the Interior to a citizen who killed dogs with a rifle.

The competent institution for solving the problem of homeless dogs in Struga is the Municipality, but the mayor Ramiz Merko believes that this problem should be solved by the Government, by changing the Law. Merko demands that a law be passed by which the Veterinary Agency at the state level will deal with solving the situation with homeless dogs.

The views regarding this problem in Struga are conflicting, some of the citizens are looking for a solution, and activists are looking for the protection of dogs, but at the same time some of the media deliberately or do not publish information that has not been verified and is not professional information in order to defocus the real problem.

In the past week, according to the data from the Ministry of the Interior's bulletin, reports were registered of about 20 attacks by homeless dogs in the territory of the entire country.
