Is Greece rightly angry with Zaev for using the adjective "Macedonian"?

The adjective Macedonian / Macedonian / Macedonian once again stirred the public after Prime Minister Zoran Zaev wrote on the social network Twitter: "Today from the stadium in Amsterdam I give strong support to the Macedonian national football team."

After such an announcement Greek government spokeswoman Aristotle Peloni warned the Prime Minister that he was violating the Prespa Agreement when he mentioned the "Macedonian football team", without using the adjective "northern".

- We demand full implementation of the Prespa Agreement in the spirit in which it was signed. We call on Mr. Zaev to refrain from spreading rhetoric of divisions, especially on sensitive issues such as football. In any case, the implementation of the agreement is one of the criteria for the accession of that country to the European Union, said Peloni.

Greek Kathimerini announced that the government will freeze three memoranda arising from the Prespa Agreement (Memorandum for accelerating the process of integration of Northern Macedonia into the EU; Memorandum for establishing a coordinating committee for economic cooperation and Technical Agreement for monitoring FIR Skopje in September), which were left in the Greek Parliament, after which their ratification was announced after they had completed the prescribed procedures.

Yesterday at the Skopje Economic Forum, Zaev said that he made a mistake when he said "the Macedonian national football team" because, as he said, it is contrary to the Prespa Agreement.

- I always send friendly messages, I believe in the Prespa Agreement, I did it together friend Alexis Tsipras and I'm the first to follow it, sometimes I make a mistake, I'm 46 years old I happen to mention it in one sentence and repeat it someday, said Zaev.

University professor Lyudmil Spasov says part of Gracia's reaction to the Prespa Accord is justified.

- The Greek side is right when it reacts to the use of the adjective Macedonian in the context of the example "Macedonian national football team", because according to the Prespa Agreement the adjective Macedonian can be used when talking or writing about Macedonian literature, Macedonian music, Macedonian ballet, or in other words about the cultural and national identity, but not in the given example "Macedonian national football team". According to the Prespa Agreement, it would be "Football team of Northern Macedonia", but not a northern Macedonian national team. The adjective is not used in the context when we talk about Macedonian products, until the adoption of the rules of the two commissions dealing with trademarks of both countries. However, Greece is not right about the use of the abbreviation MK or MKD because the Prespa Agreement states that in addition to Internet addresses can be used in other places. It is according to ISO standards. For example, MKD abbreviation to write at football matches That is why UEFA reacted and justified RSM, says Spasov.

According to Spasov, citizens in private communication are free to use the adjective Macedonian in any case, but not in international use.

This raises the dilemma of whether Zaev wrote the tweet as a private communication or as Prime Minister.

On the other hand political science expert Betian Kitev He told "Sloboden Pecat" that Prime Minister Zaev not only did not make a mistake, but did absolutely what every Macedonian would do.

- The use of the adjective Macedonian is not prohibited anywhere in the Prespa Agreement. And this is not the first or last match of our football heroes for the Republic of Greece to react now. From this impression I have so far, I think it is more a question of political use inside Greece, especially since I think it is quite clear. It is very clear that Article 1 and then Article 7 of the Prespa Agreement precisely defines the terms Macedonia and Macedonian. It is very clearly specified, it would say a linguistic and cultural adjective, ie a determinant that we can use without any restrictions, without any restrictions, says Kitev.

According to him, the blocked memoranda in the Greek Parliament are actually blocked from the moment New Democracy took over the executive and policy management and if we look in detail at their developments we will see that Syriza as an opposition party, not only now but a year ago insisted on ratification of the memoranda.

- I think that these are more internal political issues because New Democracy must show some difference in relation to Syriza, given that Syriza was the bearer of, I would say the conclusion of the Prespa Agreement, says Kitev.

Two years ago, the Government issued a Guideline for the media which reads, inter alia: Having in mind the change of the official name of Northern Macedonia, we submit a guide that would be used when giving a description of our country under the Prespa Agreement. Please use the following terms:

The official name of the country: "Republic of Northern Macedonia"; Short name: "Northern Macedonia".
Nationality (citizenship): Macedonian / citizen of the Republic of Northern Macedonia

Official language: "Macedonian language"

Country codes: MK and MKD

The adjective "Macedonian / o / a" should be used when it is related to ethnic and cultural identity of the people, our language, history, culture, heritage, territory and other features. Such terms in this context are particularly different from those used and are related to the region of Macedonia in Greece.

Government sources, when asked by Sloboden Pecat why the adjective "Macedonian" must not be used in the context of the national football team, unofficially say that in this case the Macedonian national football team is a representative of the state.

Syriza demands from New Democracy to respect the Prespa Agreement

Former Greek Foreign Minister Katrougalos, who is now an MP from the opposition party, is asking current Foreign Minister Dendias for information on why the ratification of the three memoranda with our country is late, despite the fact that they were passed in parliament in mid-September last year.

The parliamentary question reads that, despite the current Greek government's stance on respecting the Prespa Agreement, "there are still serious problems of delays and many cases of hypocrisy on the part of ministers and members of New Democracy."

"It is clear that the opposition to the Prespa Agreement to certain New Democracy representatives, including former Prime Minister Samaras, is not an excuse for these delays, which are detrimental to national interests." writes Katrugalos in a parliamentary question.

During the recent visit of Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani to Athens, the signing of several memoranda stemming from the Prespa Agreement was also announced, during his meeting with Dendias.
